Belém

One of the things that impressed me the most about Portugal were its artistic and architectural expressions. In my opinion, the Portuguese Baroque is extraordinary, but if I had to point out some truly indigenous and original architectural feature, I would necessarily have to write you about Manueline architecture.

The Manueline style, originated with King Manuel I of Portugal (1495 - 1521) from which it owes its name and impulse, developed into a kind of medieval, Gothic and later Renaissance mixtures. Highly symbolic and allegorical, from syncretism the pattern was generated, which would mark the most exalted of expressions, when we speak in European Portuguese, of architecture.

And so, the Torre of Belém in the photograph you see, is one of the greatest exponents of the Manueline style.
