Nature dead but standing II

Nature dead but standing II

This photograph was taken in the valley known as Dead Vlei within the Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia and it reminds me that even in death, there is beauty.

Fed by the Tsauchab River, at some point this place was a swamp that was being isolated by the formation of the dunes that are seen in the photograph. And so, disconnected from their vital source, these trees have apparently been dead for more than 600 years, still standing due to the lack of humidity in the environment that prevents them from rotting.

The Dead Vlei, in turn, is a place that lends itself to reflection on that transformation that we call “life” and that we call “death”, since it makes us wonder whether or not we are leading a meaningful life.
